A preview of Iron Wings by Donna Uchizono, scheduled to premiere at The Chocolate Factory in 2020, on a shared program with Mariana Valencia, who will preview her work Bouquet.

Iron Wings, a new work for five dancers with an original score by composer David Shively and set design by Janet Echelman, will challenge expected hierarchies of weight by investigating “the weight in-between” and other concepts less often considered. In this work I will weigh the space between – the pauses between words, colors we see, and the skin color we wear. I open the work by posing the question: If you were to dedicate a dance to someone, who would that person be? The then begins with challenging exertions of the body and, in unfolding this tough exterior over time, allows a new kind of intimacy to emerge. Developing this work in our times has made me especially sensitive to moments that reminds us of our humanity, moments that lead us towards a common understanding in a divisive cultural and political moment.
